RESUMO

Objective@#To investigate incidence of traffic injury and its associated factors among secondary school students in Shanghai, so as to provide scientific basis for intervention.@*Methods@#Using the method of multi stage stratified random cluster sampling, an on-the-spot anonymous questionnaire survey was conducted among 19 629 adolescents from 16 districts in Shanghai from May to June 2021. The multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze possible associated factors.@*Results@#The rate of road traffic injuries among secondary school students in Shanghai was 0.74%, the highest reporting rate among secondary vocational school students (1.35%), followed by junior high school students (0.72%), and the lowest reporting rate of road traffic injuries among senior high school students (0.55%), with statistically significant differences ( χ 2=13.39, P <0.01). The results of multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that the junior high school ( OR =0.56, 95% CI =0.35-0.89) or senior high school ( OR = 0.40 , 95% CI =0.24-0.68) and residential school ( OR =0.39, 95% CI =0.18-0.88) were protective factors of road traffic injuries( P <0.05). Male ( OR =1.65, 95% CI =1.14-2.37), unaware of seat belt ( OR =6.38, 95% CI =2.81-14.50), had a cycling chase/fight ( OR =2.33, 95% CI =1.39-3.90), music or phone calls on a bicycle ( OR =2.54, 95% CI =1.72-3.75) were positively correlated with road traffic injury( P <0.05).@*Conclusions@#The road traffic injury among secondary school students in Shanghai is related to many factors, and traffic hazards are common among students in all school sections. Targeted measures should be taken to strengthen traffic safety knowledge education and intervention in healthy behaviors among adolescents, in order to reduce the incidence of road traffic injury.

RESUMO

Objective@#To investigate the current situation of cyberbullying and health risk behaviors among secondary vocational school students, to explore the effects of cyberbullying on health risk behaviors, so as to provide a reference for formulating intervention strategies to promote adolescent health related behaviors.@*Methods@#From March to April 2023, a field survey was conducted on 1 184 students from one secondary vocational school each in Jilin City and Yanji City by random cluster sampling method. The data was analyzed using Chi square tests and generalized linear models.@*Results@#Among secondary vocational school students, 839 individuals (70.9%) experienced the cyberbullying, and 1 036 individuals (87.5%) had one and more health risk behavior group. There was a positive correlation between cyberbullying and health risk behaviors ( r=0.60, P <0.01). The generalized linear model analysis showed that female and no Internet addiction were negatively correlated with the health risk behaviors of secondary vocational students ( β =-2.75, -8.90), and the single parent families and peer pressure was positively correlated with the health behaviors of secondary vocational students ( β =2.56, 4.82)( P <0.05). Secondary vocational students experienced cyberbullying who from single parent families, peer pressure and social oriented internet usage were more likely to engage in health risk behaviors ( β= 3.41, 4.88, 2.20, P <0.05).@*Conclusions@#The incidence of cyberbullying and health risk behaviors among secondary vocational school students is relatively high, and cyberbullying can influence the occurrence of health risk behaviors. It is important to focus on and implement guidance for internet use and health behavior education for secondary vocational students from multiple perspectives, including the family, school, and society. Corresponding intervention strategies should be taken to promote the healthy development of adolescents.

RESUMO

Lifestyles such as physical exercise, sedentary behavior, eating habits, and sleep duration are all associated with adolescent overweight and obesity. The purpose of this study was to investigate how Chinese adolescents' lifestyles clustered into different lifestyle patterns, and to analyze the correlation between these patterns and adolescent overweight and obesity. The investigated respondents included 13,670 adolescents aged 13-18 from various administrative regions in China. Latent class analysis was employed to cluster the lifestyles of adolescents, χ2 test and Logistic regression were used to explore the relationship between lifestyle patterns and overweight and obesity in adolescents. The results identified 6 types of Chinese adolescents' lifestyle patterns, as well as the significant differences in gender and age. The adolescents with high exercise-high calorie diet had the lowest risk of overweight and obesity, and the adolescents with low consciousness-low physical activity and low consciousness-unhealthy had the highest risk of overweight and obesity, which were 1.432 times and 1.346 times higher than those with high exercise-high calorie diet, respectively. The studied demonstrated that there was a coexistence of healthy behaviors and health-risk behaviors in the lifestyle clustering of Chinese adolescents. Low physical exercise and high intake of snacks and carbonated beverages were the most common. Physical exercise and health consciousness were the protective factors of overweight and obesity in adolescents.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We believe that major steps can be taken towards Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) prevention through identifying the relevant factors that are apt to predict risky behavior. The main purpose of the present study was to analyze and evaluate the relationship of social support, family functioning, self-efficacy and AIDS risk perception to controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS. METHODS: To conduct this cross-sectional study, 765 subjects (59% female) were selected from the youth inhabiting the western provinces of Iran through cluster sampling. Five questionnaires were used: AIDS risk perception, self-efficacy in controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS, controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS, the multidimensional scale of perceived social support, and the family assessment device. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that all two models enjoyed acceptable fitness, and the mediating roles of self-efficacy and AIDS risk perception were confirmed. Moreover, family functioning and perceived social support together could predict 20% of the variance of controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS. The results also indicated that family functioning with a standardized coefficient of - 0.24 and self-efficacy in controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS with a standardized coefficient of 0.58 could predict the controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that self-efficacy and AIDS risk perception play major roles in controlling risky behavior associated with AIDS. Therefore, it is recommended that families and psychologists promote self-efficacy in order to prevent the occurrence of high-risk behaviors.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is not much information about high-risk behaviors in young groups, especially students. This study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of high-risk behaviors in students of universities of medical sciences in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran, by network scale-up (NSU) method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was performed on 450 students from the universities of medical sciences. A researcher-developed checklist was used to collect the data. We considered number 16 for the social network size of students according to a previous study. Based on the response of individuals to each of the high-risk behaviors (including cigarette smoking, hookah use, opium consumption, alcohol drinking, tramadol/ecstasy taking, and extramarital sex) in their social network, the prevalence of these behaviors was estimated. The required calculations were performed using the NSU method. Furthermore, 95% uncertainty interval (UI) was calculated using the bootstrap method. RESULTS: Totally, 196 (44%) participants were male. The mean age (standard deviation) of the participants was 22 ± 2 years. Results showed that hookah use (20% 95% UI [18.9-21.1]) and opium consumption (0.4% 95% UI [0.24-0.6]) had the highest and lowest frequencies, respectively. Cigarette smoking (17% 95% UI [15.8-18]), alcohol use (8.3% 95% UI [7.5-9.1]), extramarital sex (8.2% 95% UI [7.4-9]), and tramadol/ecstasy taking (4% 95% UI [6.4-4.6]) were the next most common high-risk behaviors, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Given that hookah use and cigarette smoking are the most common high-risk behaviors in students, especially males, appropriate cultural activities and educational programs should be employed by relevant authorities to reduce these behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: to analyze "hazardousness" as a device through the publications in the fields of Social, Humanities and Health Sciences. METHOD: an integrative review of publications available in reference databases of the PUBMED, MEDLINE, LILACS, SCIELO and BDTD databases, from 2014 to 2017. Thematic analysis was used for data treatment and analysis. RESULT: a total of 43 productions were selected, organized in groups that point out the elements that compose the device, including the intertwining of knowledge, risk, guilt and intervention strategies. CONCLUSION: hazardousness as a device exposes a series of knowledge-power relationships that reproduce over time, but it also allows establishing other intervention strategies for the process of social reintegration of these subjects.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Knowing about sexual issues and substance abuse is crucial for girls in preventing high-risk behaviors in the medical, social, cultural, and evolutional levels. The aim of this study was to determine the self-care needs of adolescent girls in the domains of knowledge, attitude, and performance with regard to drug use and risky sexual behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the secondary schools located in the third district of Isfahan. Data were collected from 384 female students by systematic random sampling on 2019, and using a four-part questionnaire including demographic characteristics and self-care needs (knowledge, attitude and performance), drug addiction and unsafe sexual behaviors were measured and then were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS: According to the adolescents, "familiarity with infectious diseases caused by drug addiction", "alcohol consumption, drugs and smoking as a way of forgetting problems" and "learning the skills of excitement control," were their first self-care priorities in terms of awareness, attitude, and performance, respectively. Additionally, "understanding the social and mental effects of relationships with the other sex", "separating the children's bedrooms from that of parents" and "ways of caring for personal hygiene in menstruation period and travel time" were considered as their first self-care priorities in terms of knowledge, attitude, and performance with regard to sexual behaviors, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Based on the results, more effective interventions to protect the adolescents from being involved in substance use and sexual harmful behaviors are recommended through the training of self-care needs in adolescents.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between travellers' characteristics, compliance with pre-travel recommendations and health problems. METHODS: Volunteer travellers were enrolled and data collected using a questionnaire between 30-60 days after returning home. We analyzed the associations through bivariate and multivariate models. RESULTS: Of the 468 enrolled travelers, 68% consumed raw food and 81% food containing milk and/or eggs. 32% consumed street vendor food and 30% drinks containing ice. 24% used the recommended mechanical prophylaxis measures. 46% got sick during and/or after travel (gastrointestinal symptoms most frequently). Factors predisposing to health problems were female gender, youth/middle age, intermediate travel duration and profession. The American continent and staying in hostels and tents were significantly associated with febrile illness. Street vendor food was significantly associated with skin reactions. CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to behavioral recommendations remains low. Travellers must be informed of health risks during and after travel.
